Song Story:
Nearly a decade ago, my best friend (Dylan) penned this song for Ally, his girlfriend (now beloved bride). She was walking through a storm and Dylan wrote this song to lift her up and point her to Jesus in the midst of it. After he wrote it, Dylan brought the song to me for feedback and polish. I was immediately enchanted by the message and melodies and within a few hours, I had woven together something like 5 guitar parts, percussion, bass, piano, strings, mandolin, banjo and began crafting the track for him. We joke that I like this song more than they do, which is the truth in all likelihood haha!

Fast forward to February 2023 when we received the heart shattering news that Dylan and Ally unexpectedly lost their precious baby son, Brycen. Where do we anchor our hope when we open our eyes and find that we have suddenly been plunged into the valley of the shadow of death? How do we endure such immense and earth-shaking tragedy and loss?

By grace, we can lift our eyes to the King who himself became deeply aquatinted with grief and in order to provide us with a high priest who can empathize with us (see Hebrews 4). We can gaze upon this Suffering Servant and be confident of the glorious Gospel truth, that we have never been beyond the reach of God’s love, grace, mercy, and care in Christ Jesus, who with His completed work on the cross, secured assurance for the one experiencing the long dark night of the soul that the sun will break again; He will wipe away every tear from our eyes, death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more (see Revelation 21).

With tear filled eyes as I write this, I humbly present this song to you, Dylan and Ally, my cherished friends, in loving memory and honor of your sweet son, Brycen. May the faithfulness and tenderness of Jesus Christ forever be the banner over Brycen’s memory, and may His grace and peace continue to meet us in our grief until He returns. I love you dearly.
